“Balancing life, love, and entrepreneurship isn't a juggling act—it's a harmonious blend that thrives on passion, boundaries, and mutual respect.”
Welcome to the first-ever blog post for Velvet Ventures! As a married couple running multiple businesses, we've discovered that the quest for work-life balance is more like a lifelong adventure. Through our podcast and blog, we aim to share the lessons we've learned, the challenges we've faced, and the joys we've found in this unique intersection of life, marriage, and entrepreneurship. Our blog will be a collection of stories, transcripts, and extra thoughts we have throughout the month.
People often ask us, "Is it hard to work with your spouse?" And our answer usually is, "It can be as complicated as we make it." This answer may sound like a diplomatic sidestep, but it's a truthful reflection of our experience. Here's what we mean:
Differing Opinions: Having different viewpoints is not just inevitable; we consider it one of our greatest assets. When home life and work life overlap, contrasting opinions can take center stage. Yet, it's usually in the space between our perspectives where the best solutions emerge. More often than not, the most effective answer isn't solely mine or solely Channing's—it's a blend of both.
Pressure and Stress: The stress of daily business operations can easily seep into our personal lives if we're not vigilant. We've learned that a tough day at the office shouldn't sour our evenings at home. Early on, we made plenty of mistakes, but that helped us refine our approach. Now, we focus on the tone, volume, and pace of our conversations, using cues to signal support rather than opposition.
Role Confusion: It's easy to forget which hat you're wearing — are you speaking as a spouse or a business partner? This overlap can lead to misunderstandings if not properly managed. Getting in a rhythm, especially when working from home, is important. When do we prioritize the chores and when do we overlook them to get work done. Keeping space for relaxation and self-care is vital.
Shared Goals: One of the biggest advantages is having a partner who fully shares your business aspirations. What might sound like idle pillow talk actually translates into concrete plans we're both dedicated to executing. This mutual commitment not only propels us forward, but also provides a well of encouragement when either of us feels disheartened.
Built-In Support: There's a unique kind of emotional support that comes from someone who is as invested in your business successes and failures as you are. When your business partner is your best friend who you also get to be married to, it's easy to find accountability on the days that are tough.
Constant Collaboration: From brainstorming over dinner to solving complex business issues during a car ride, the collaboration never stops. These interactions not only contribute to our business but also bring a dynamic aspect to our relationship that we genuinely cherish.
While it’s incredibly convenient to discuss work anytime, it’s also a potential pitfall. Without boundaries, we run the risk of letting work consume our relationship. We've found it beneficial to prioritize "work-free" times and spaces where business discussions are off-limits. We also honor each other's creative spurts, allowing one to take a breather even while the other is deep in work mode.
In essence, running a business with your life partner can be as smooth or as complicated as you allow it to be. Communication and boundaries have been our most invaluable tools in managing the complex but incredibly rewarding adventure of being both life partners and business partners.
Communication is Key
The first rule in our book is open communication. We've found that speaking candidly about our expectations, fears, and objectives helps us avoid misunderstandings and conflict. Transparency in business dealings is crucial, and so is honesty in our relationship.
Striving for work-life balance implies that work and life are opposing forces that need to be equally weighed. Instead, we focus on work-life integration. We've learned how to weave business talks into our daily life without it being overwhelming or stressful.
We are incredibly excited to take you along on our journey through Velvet Ventures' blog. Stay tuned for more insights, tips, and reflections as we navigate the enthralling yet demanding world of entrepreneurship and marriage.
